Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups sushi rice
- 2 1/2 cups water
- 1/4 cup rice vinegar
- 2 tbsp sugar
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 4 sheets nori (seaweed)
- 1/2 lb sushi-grade tuna (or cooked shrimp for substitution)
- 1/2 avocado, thinly sliced
- 1/2 cucumber, julienned
- 1/4 cup cream cheese (optional for a creamy texture)
- Soy sauce, for serving
- Pickled ginger, for serving
- Wasabi, for serving
Instructions
- Rinse the sushi rice under cold water until the water runs clear. In a saucepan, combine the rice and water. Bring it to a boil, then reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for about 18 minutes. Remove from heat and let it sit, covered, for another 10 minutes.
- In a small bowl, mix rice vinegar, sugar, and salt until dissolved. Pour this mixture over the cooked rice and gently fold it in. Allow the rice to cool to room temperature.
- Lay a sheet of nori, shiny side down, on a bamboo sushi mat. Spread a thin layer of rice over the nori, leaving about 1 inch at the top.
- Arrange the sushi-grade tuna, avocado slices, cucumber, and cream cheese (if using) horizontally along the middle of the rice.
- Roll the sushi tightly from the bottom using the sushi mat to guide you, then moisten the top edge with a little water to seal the roll.
- Using a sharp knife, slice the sushi roll into bite-sized pieces. Repeat the process with the remaining ingredients.
- Serve with soy sauce, pickled ginger, and wasabi on the side.
